Means of achieving the welfare state

Nationalisation of utilities and industries
- british government took over the management of public utilities
- they wuld run these for the benefits fo the citizengs
therefore creakting employment ensuring that these services remained affordable

Provision of social welfare
- create a basket of welfare benefits to ease hardship caused by poverty etc,
- 1940s - passed laws
- money to pay these ppl came from the government and taxes collected from workers and employers

Provision of health and medical care
- national health service free medical service for all citizens
- money to pay these medical services came from a combination of taxes and worker insurance payment

Low Efficiency
- believe that government could always provide more funds
- companies operated at a loss and soon needed large amt of money frm government
- NHS inadequate doctors/nurses to deal with increasing no. of patients

INCREASE IN GOVERNMENT SPENDING
- took advantage of free health and medical care

BUSINESS DRIVEN AWAY
- tax the rich and businessmen heavily
- therefore move overseas to avoid paying taxes
- no longer motivated to invest in the country

"WHY WORK" attitude
- politicians claimed that welfare benefits made the poor trap in vicious cycle
- little or no motivation to work as they can live on welfare benefits

MOVING AWAY FROM WELFARE STATE

- government hoped that by spending less could tax less
therefore citizens could work harder to generate more income for themselves
- a system tht would reduce burden on the expenditure on welfare and medical services

PRIVATISATION OF PUBLIC UTILITIES AND HEALTHCARE
-competition resulting from privatisation would reduce government subsidies etc.
- encouraged to take responsiblities for own welfare/health

FUTURE OF WELFARE STATE
- privatisation is one way of reducing government subsidies and saving costr
- british governmentcannot do away with welfare state completely as many people are against the idea, government may lose vote of the people
